HZE Brain

A living inventory of infrastructure: nodes, services, endpoints, SSH profiles and verification history.

  • Python
  • SQLite
  • Infrastructure Management

Overview

HZE Brain is a small but disciplined system that records what exists, what has been verified and what has changed in the infrastructure — and refuses to drift away from live reality.

It is the operational source of truth: anything recorded there has been observed, not invented.

Problem

Infrastructure details live in too many places: notes, shell history, chat messages, screenshots. It is hard to answer a simple question like 'is this service actually running, and on which host?' without re-discovering it.

Solution

A single small system that records observed infrastructure state and the timestamp of each observation. Anything not in the brain is treated as unverified, regardless of what a human memory file claims.

Implementation

Python core, SQLite for storage, collectors that read live state (services, containers, endpoints) and write only what was actually observed.

Append-only change history; the live view is the latest verified observation, not a remembered one.

Results

A single place to look up 'what exists right now' without re-discovering it.

Reduced reliance on operator memory for routine operational questions.

Technical Challenges

Keeping the verification cadence meaningful — too slow and the inventory drifts, too aggressive and the system competes with monitoring tools.

Highlights

  • Verified inventory of nodes, services and endpoints.
  • Append-only history of changes with timestamps.
  • Strict separation between live truth and human memory.
